How inclusive is AI?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming our world at an incredible pace. From how we communicate to how we work and access information – AI is everywhere. But not everyone gets to be part of this change. People with disabilities still face major barriers when it comes to digital participation. Less access to technology, fewer learning opportunities, and often no seat at the table when new systems are designed. If we don’t act now, the rise of AI could make these inequalities even worse.
As a verified social enterprise focusing on Diversity and Inclusion, WOMENTOR has therefore decided to launch a new project together with Independo GmbH – “Zukunft mitgestalten”.
What is “Zukunft Mitgestalten” about?
Zukunft mitgestalten is a participatory project that aims to make the digital space more inclusive. Together with people with disabilities, we held a series of three workshops to explore what true participation in the world of AI could look like. Participants developed ideas for new formats, tools, and frameworks that would enable meaningful co-creation and equal access. The project is supported by the City of Vienna as part of the funding initiative “Demokratiehauptstadt Wien – Kleinvorhaben für Demokratie und Beteiligung.”
Continuing the Conversation
But we don’t want the project to end there. To keep the conversation going, we launched a follow-up survey with all participants and the wider community. Our goal was to understand what people with disabilities need to learn more about AI and how they want to be involved in shaping its future. The responses were clear: there is a strong desire to learn more about the risks and safe use of AI — from recognizing misinformation and AI-generated content, to protecting personal data and understanding bias in algorithms. People want practical knowledge and simple tools that help them use AI confidently and responsibly.
Why it Matters & What is Next
These insights show that accessibility in AI isn’t just about technology, it’s about trust, safety, and empowerment. When people understand how AI works, they can make informed decisions and actively shape how these technologies impact their lives.
At WOMENTOR and Independo, we believe that inclusion must be at the heart of digital innovation. Our journey with Zukunft mitgestalten has just begun, and we’re excited to continue learning, sharing, and exploring new ways to make AI accessible for everyone.
